Martin Luther King Day Commemoration: Continuing His Inspirational Legacy

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr

The Arkansas State University campus is preparing a massive celebration in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on Monday, Jan. 15, at 10:30 a.m. themed "A Dream: What the World Needs Now." Organized by the Northeast Arkansas Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Parade Planning Committee, the event symbolizes Dr. King's vision for global peace and justice. Dr. Lonnie Williams, vice chancellor of the Division of Diversity, Inclusion and Community Engagement, emphasized the importance of advocating for Dr. King's dream in today's turbulent world.

Prior to the festivities, a youth program will take place on Sunday, January 14 at the Jonesboro High School Auditorium, enabling young talents to showcase their skills. On Monday, the parade will begin at 9:30 a.m., starting at the Lt. Col. Frederick Turner Jr. Military Science Building and winding through the city streets, featuring a diverse participation of community members, students, leaders and marching bands.

The morning events will conclude in the afternoon with a speech by Jeannie M. Cotton, a distinguished licensed professional counselor and former CEO of a mental health organization. A-State canceled classes to allow students to join in the celebration, with only one day off to emphasize the importance of honoring Dr. King's legacy.

Additionally, Hamline University has planned an event focusing on Dr. King's Nobel Lecture speech, "The Quest for Peace and Justice," on Tuesday, January 16, as part of the National Day of Racial Healing. The event will include various speakers, student ideas, a presentation of the Beloved Community Awards and a performance by special guest musician Jovonta Patton.

Both events highlight Dr. King's ongoing commitment to his vision of social justice, racial equality and peace, intended to inspire individuals to pursue his mission. These commemorations serve as a poignant reminder of the work required to achieve Dr. King's aspirations for a more just and equitable society.
